CBD for Inflammation: How CBD May Alleviate Inflammation

Inflammation and its Harmful Effects on the Body

Inflammation is defined as “a localized physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot and often painful, especially as a reaction to injury or infection.” Inflammation is a way that the body actually defends itself and is an immune system response. The immune system is actually trying to protect the body and is attempting to alleviate damage or some kind of pathogen. In fact, without inflammation, the body would not be able to heal things like wounds or infections.

While this is an incredible testament of the human body’s capability to correct itself, long term inflammation can lead to health conditions and diseases. Some of these diseases include asthma, autoimmune disorders, neurodegeneration, cardiac diseases and inflammatory bowel disease. Tissue damage is another threat caused by long-term inflammation. Without treatment, these conditions can progress and will have adverse effects on one’s wellbeing. Fortunately, cannabinoids have shown major successes in treating inflammation and work through the body’s endocannabinoid system.

What Part Does the Endocannabinoid System play within the body?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is biological system found in the body composed of neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids (your body’s own THC) that bind to cannabinoid receptors. There are two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 is found in the central nervous system, which includes your brain. CB2 is found in the peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal system and immune system. Just like any other disruption in your body’s natural processes, you will feel adverse effects when the ECS is unbalanced.

Creating Balance in the Endocannabinoid System

Let’s look at how cannabinoids can help balance the ECS and relieve inflammation throughout the body. The ECS interacts with major pain systems in the body and can control inflammation and pain. As discussed above, inflammation in an immune system response in which the body is beginning to heal itself. CB2 receptors are found in immune system cells and will utilize the cannabinoids to amplify the healing process. Unlike other anti-inflammatory drugs (like NSAIDs), there aren’t dangerous side effects associated with cannabinoids.

One cannabinoid, CBD, has been receiving large amounts of research and is creating a name for itself with its anti-inflammatory properties. CBD (cannabidiol) is able to maintain consistency and works ubiquitously throughout the endocannabinoid system creating homeostasis. Homeostasis is a state in which there is internal balance regardless of outside stimuli. CBD is also able to act on cytokines, which are proteins that are released at the first signs of inflammation and then help resolve it. Cytokines works to prevent tissue damage. CBD helps regulate the balance of cytokines so that inflammation can be managed, working together in a synergistic relationship. CBD is also responsible for increasing the availability of endocannabinoids in the system and this also increases the effectiveness within the ECS.
