CBD & Blood Health

The blood is responsible for carrying oxygen with red blood cells and fighting infections with white blood cells. Platelets spring into action when there is an injury to stop bleeding. Plasma carries nutrients, hormones and proteins throughout the body. As blood directly effects everything in the body, it’s important to ensure all blood-related aspects are in good shape, like your blood pressure.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid derived from the hemp plant that does not cause a “high.” CBD works directly with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a physiological system responsible for homeostasis. Homeostasis means creating internal balance regardless of stimuli. The ECS balances functions like regulated sleep, reduced mood disturbance (like anxiety and depression), lessening pain and inflammation, and immune function. CBD and the ECS are also important in cardiovascular health. They improve blood pressure, filtration of the blood by keeping the liver healthy and fight life-threatening blood infections.

Blood Pressure

CBD helps lower blood pressure by reducing anxiety and stress levels. By promoting a sense of calmness, the user is able to relax while reducing heart rate and blood pressure. CBD also helps maintain the calm state, helping to keep blood pressure stabilized. Cannabidiol is a vasodilator, which opens up blood vessels and allows blood to flow more easily. High blood pressure can cause damage to the arteries and the heart causing issues like an enlarged heart or coronary artery disease. CBD is also effective in reducing the issues caused by damaged blood vessels.

Supporting the Liver: Filtering the Blood

The liver is responsible for filtering all of the blood coming from the digestive tract before it goes through the rest of the body. Here, the liver detoxes chemical and metabolizes medications/drugs. The liver also produces proteins that are utilized in blood clotting. The ECS activates when the liver is unhealthy, protecting the tissue from inflammatory responses to infection or injury. CBD has been shown to cause death in hepatic stellate cells, which causing liver scarring. The British Journal of Pharmacology published a study that credited CBD with improving hepatic encephalopathy, a disorder associated with liver failure where cognitive and motor function are diminished. The results of mice treated with CBD found that liver function was restored and brain function normalized. If the liver begins to fail, it’s filtrating and detoxifying functions will decline in conjunction.

Blood Infections

Sepsis is a serious, life-threatening bacterial infection that effects the bloodstream. The immune system releases excessive pro-inflammatory molecules to fight the bacterial pathogens. This can cause damage to tissue and organs in the patient. CBD binds to the ECS’s receptor CB-2, which assists in immune function. As a powerful anti-inflammatory, cannabidiol can be used to calm the immune response and reduce swelling. Additionally, CBD is an antimicrobial capable of fighting viral, fungal and bacterial infections. It is especially effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria, like MRSA. Extensive research is being conducted on CBD on this topic and more medical sources are recognizing its importance in patient’s treatment.
