CBD and Oral Health

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a powerful cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. Cannabidiol works directly with the body’s physiological system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS function to achieve and maintain internal functioning regardless of outside stimuli. The ECS uses cannabinoids to regulate and CBD is a perfect option. CBD is able to bind to both the CB-1 and CB-2 receptors in the ECS, but doesn’t have any of the psychoactive effects like THC does.

CBD is being hailed for its antimicrobial properties. This means that it is capable of combating viral, fungal and bacterial infections. Additionally, being antimicrobial can stop any form of infection from developing in the first place. When CBD binds with the CB-2 receptor in the ECS, it helps regulate the immune functions in the body.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a form of gum disease that caused inflamed gums. Symptoms include swollen, puffy, receding gums that can sometimes bleed. Without proper and regular cleanings, plaque caused by bacteria can form and harden into tartar. Gingivitis can lead to Periodontitis if proper interventions are not taken. CBD’s ability to fight bacterial infections and bacterial growth, combined with proper oral hygiene, it is a powerful way to combat gingivitis and its progression.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more serious gum infection that can damage the jawbone. The symptoms include gaps in between the gums (creating pockets), where more bacteria can form. It is much harder to clean and can result in bone loss, giving the potential for your teeth to become loose or fall out. Similar to Gingivitis, CBD can fight the bacteria growing in the gum pockets and protect the bones. By removing the bacterial infection, the gums can begin to heal with proper hygiene.

Cavities

Cavities are permanently damaged areas of the teeth that form tiny holes. Oral bacteria can wear down your teeth the same way it effects the gums. The buildup of plague causes a coating of bacteria and take minerals out of your teeth. One of the most common forms of bacteria behind this is Streptococcus mutans. CBD is shown too specifically to target and fight this bacteria, which will help prevent the formation of cavities.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)

TMJ causes pain and impaired movement in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Aside from pain, this condition can make it hard to chew or cause the jaw to lock. CBD can help with TMJ in a number of ways. Cannabidiol is an anti-inflammatory, which can reduce the swelling in the jaw joint. Also a analgesic, or pain reliever, the discomfort associated with TMJ will be reduced. CBD also promotes relaxation, which can help stop the tightening, clenching and grinding actions that make TMJ worse.

Thrush

Thrush is a fungal yeast infection that develops on the inside of the mouth and on the tongue. As noted before, CBD is an antimicrobial that can fight and prevent fungal infections. While fungus is harder to kill, CBD boosts the immune system to fight the infection. Cannabidiol also can stop harmful cells from multiplying and spreading further in the body.
