CBD is a cannabinoid found in the hemp plant that’s quickly making a name for itself by treating a host of ailments. Unlike the THC cannabinoid, CBD (cannabidiol) doesn’t have the psychoactive qualities and won’t get you “high.” Cannabidiol works directly with endocannabinoid system (ECS) to provide this physiological arrangement with the needed cannabinoids to achieve homeostasis (internal functioning). To name a few, the ECS is responsible to regulating mood, sleep, the immune system and fights off infections and cancer. Research published in the scientific journal, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, points towards CBD’s efficiency with weight loss.
What Did This Research find?
What researchers looked at was the effect of CBD on preadipocytes, or immature fat cells. Genes and proteins increased the breakdown and oxidation of fat. This is a natural process in which the body uses fat as fuel to create energy. CBD increased the body’s ability to burn fat by higher mitochondria production and activity. Mitochondria are responsible for converting nutrients consumed into energy. There was a decrease in the amount of protein expressed in lipogenesis. Lipogenesis is fat that is stored in adipose tissues (belly, hips, etc) and CBD decreases fat cell generation.
There was also findings of “fat browning.” Fat browning is turning white fat tissue to beige fat tissue. White fat tissue stores energy, which stores fat. It is the most predominant fat source in the body and is the largest reserve of energy. Too much stored white fat can lead to risks like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Beige fat tissue burns and metabolizes fat. Beige fat burns calories to generate heat and there is significantly less of this in the body after infancy.
How Does the CBD Help With Weight Loss?
The ECS is connected with some metabolic functions, like storing energy and regulating insulin sensitivity. CBD can decrease appetite and lower food intake, which can help with weight loss. CBD can promote restful sleep patterns, reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal system and can reduce the effects of anxiety and stress. Proper sleep gives your body the time to heal itself and prepare itself to function during waking hours. Reducing inflammation in the gut can improve proper absorption of nutrients and expelling toxins from the body. Anxiety and stress will increase cortisol in the body, which a stress hormone. Excessive cortisol can lead to weight gain, especially in the abdomen.
It’s important to distinguish that other cannabinoids can have the opposite effect. CBN and THC both show an increase in appetite, which can lead to weight gain when combined with lack of exercise or the types of foods the user chooses to eat. It is also recommended not to overstimulate the ECS, which can led to fat storage in the abdomen, insulin resistance and increase the storage of fat cells. Therapeutic dosing should be started in low amounts, monitored for effectiveness and then increased if needed. If done correctly the CBD can help with your metabolism.
