Borderline personality disorder is defined as a mental illness marked by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. Symptoms include mood swings of anger, anxiety, mania and depression. A person who is borderline has insecurities about themselves, their relationships and the world around them. Their interests, values and opinions can change quickly and their opinions are often extreme. A situation or person will either be all good or all bad, which can also vary easily. Someone suffering may be quite impulsive in their decision making. Each person have varying severity and frequencies of symptoms, which can be triggered by normal events.

Consequences can include struggling with interactions or tasks at work, being successful at school and maintaining healthy relationships. By struggling with controlling mood, it is exceptionally difficult to be in a professional or academic setting. Difficulty trusting and explosive reactions can be truly damaging to personal relationships. An estimated 14.7 millions Americans are effected by this disorder.

A study in the Biological Psychiatry journal indicates that people with this disorder have a smaller amygdala and it is hyperactive. The amygdala is a part of the brain and is involved with experiencing emotions. The major emotion regulated by the amygdala is fear, controlling the way we react to threatening situations. When this part of the brain is hyperactive, people experience hypervigilance and unregulated moods. Hypervigilance is an increased sensory sensitivity, which can cause an increased response to stimuli and constant observation of the environment. In short, hypervigilance increases anxiety significantly to the point of exhaustion.

CBD, cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found within its highest concentrations in the hemp plant. CBD is shown to promote calmness, relaxation and a reduction in anxiety, even in severe case like those with PTSD. CBD fuels the physiological system in the body known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The primary function of the ECS is to promote homeostasis, or internal balance. Some of the processes the ECS regulates are sleep, mood balance, pain, inflammation and immune responses.

While there is no cure for borderline personality disorder, it is possible to live a happy and successful life filled with meaningful relationship. For those suffering, mood regulation is critical. The ECS will use cannabidiol to not only improve mood, but to keep it balanced. By negating anger, mania, anxiety and depression, someone with the disorder can have a healthier lens to view their lives and themselves through.

Compared to prescription medications, CBD does not have adverse side effects in therapeutic doses. There is a debate on using marijuana in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. THC can cause anxiety or paranoia in users, which would worsen the borderline symptoms. Cannabidiol is not psychoactive, meaning it does not produce a high or similar side effects. CBD can even neutralize the side effects of THC. It is important to discuss all available treatment options with a medical professional to find the best route of care.
