What is Limonene?

Limonene is a very common terpene found in a large variety of plants. Terpenes are found in the essential oils of plants and provide their own therapeutic elements. Terpenes are referred to as “aromatic compounds”and interact with the cannabinoid receptors. Dr. Ethan Russo, MD, the Director of Research and Development at International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute and a Senior Medical Advisor found the synergistic effects of cannabinoids and terpenes. He referred to this as the “entourage effect.”Russo’s research found “complementary pharmacological activities that may strengthen and broaden clinical applications and improve the therapeutic index of cannabis extracts.”

In cannabis and hemp plants, Limonene is found in high contents and is majorly responsible for the aromatics and flavor. Conifer examples of Limonene include pine needles and juniper; while citrus examples include lemons, limes and oranges. Limonene can also be found in other fragrant herbs; such as rosemary, dill and caraway. Limonene can be used in multiple ways, including an aromatherapy agent, added to rubs and creams due to its ability to penetrate the skins and can also be safely ingested.

What are the benefits of Limonene?

Limonene has been found to provide benefits to a multitude of health issues, such as preventing and treating cancer and boosting the immune system. Due to its antioxidant properties, Limonene has been shown to combat free radicals in the body and prevent the growth . This terpene has also shown a stimulation in antibodies and immune cells. Additionally, the antioxidants can help to protect your eyes by neutralizing the damage of hydrogen peroxide, a natural by-product of the human metabolism.

Limonene also has anti-inflammatory properties, which have been shown to reduce swelling and pain. Reduction in swelling has been observed in the respiratory system, which leads to improved airflow to the lungs. Limonene has been shown to reduce pain in women that are in active labor as well as reducing the nausea and vomiting often experienced during labor. Studies show that those with intestinal inflammation showed a reduction in that inflammation and promoted regularity in bowel movements. Other gastric benefits include the reduction or elimination of heartburn.

Another benefit of this terpene is the improvement of metabolic symptoms. Blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar decreased while antioxidants in the body increase. LDL cholesterol levels also decreased, which HDL levels increased in conjunction with the use of Limonene. Limonene also helps to reduce appetite and boost the breakdown of fat cells.

Why use CBD products with Limonene terpenes?

The calming effects of Limonene work directly with CBD (cannabidiol) in order to promote further relaxation, reduce anxiety and lift depression. Limonene works through the serotonin system in the brain to create anti-anxiety affects. CBD is a non-toxic, non-psychoactive antioxidant cannabinoid.

Limonene appears to work best in conjunction with other compounds, including those found in hemp. Its antibacterial properties boost the CBD’s existing antibiotic functions, aiding in the healing of wound infections and acne. With the combined effects, many people find relief in enviromental stressors. In this case, the cannabidiol and terpene work together in order to provide health benefits and improve the overall well-being of the person.
